Using Takeoff UI with AI Assistants
AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Codex often answer Takeoff UI questions from their training data. That data is usually out of date: props get invented, events get the wrong name, and examples mix conventions from other libraries. Installing the Takeoff UI Agent Skills in your project gives your assistant the real API instead.
Agent Skills
Agent Skills are folders with a SKILL.md file that
assistants load when a task matches the skill's description. Takeoff UI ships
two:
| Skill | Loaded when you… |
|---|---|
takeoff-ui | mention a tk-* component or a @takeoff-ui package, or build UI with Takeoff UI in React, Vue or Angular |
takeoff-ui-theme | work on design tokens, the Tailwind plugin, colors, theming or dark mode |
The takeoff-ui skill includes an API reference for every component (props,
events, methods and slots), the mapping from common names to Takeoff UI tags
(for example "modal" → tk-dialog), event naming for each framework, and the
common mistakes to avoid. The component reference is generated from the
component source on every release, so it matches the code.
Install
Run this in the root of your project:
npx skills add turkishtechnology/takeoff-ui
The skills CLI asks which skills to install and which
assistants you use. To skip the prompts, name them:
npx skills add turkishtechnology/takeoff-ui --skill '*' -a claude-code -a cursor -a github-copilot -y
The skills are written to .agents/skills/. Cursor, Codex and GitHub Copilot
read that folder directly; for Claude Code the CLI adds links under
.claude/skills/. Commit these folders and the generated skills-lock.json so
everyone on the team gets the same skills.
To install the skills for your user account instead of a single project, add
-g.
Installing without the CLI
Copy the
.agents/skills
folder from the Takeoff UI repository into the root of your project. For Claude
Code, copy the two skill folders into .claude/skills/ instead.
Keep them up to date
The skills are installed from the repository's default branch, which can be a
little ahead of the latest npm release. The skill tells the assistant to check
the Takeoff UI version in your package.json, so it will not rely on a prop
your installed version does not have yet. After you upgrade the @takeoff-ui
packages, update the skills as well:
npx skills update
Check that it works
Ask your assistant something that needs the current API, for example:
- "Which props does tk-gantt-chart have?"
- "Add a tk-select with search and multiple selection to this form"
- "Which event fires when a row is selected in tk-table, in Vue?"
Most assistants show when they load a skill. The last answer should be
@tk-selection-change. An assistant that guesses @tk-select is not using the
skill.
